Leading by Example: Meet the Owner
In 1995, owner and lead designer Tory Chlanda and a high school friend started a lawn mowing service with a few push mowers and a 1984 Ford ranger (bandaid in color) truck. That company, named Lawn Jockey, Inc., was the seed that sprouted our current company, Better View Landscapes. The transformation of the company into Northampton’s premier full-service landscaper is the result of decades of hard work and dedication. Throughout college, Tory kept Lawn Jockey up and running (driving 3+ hours to and from school), constantly providing local property owners with reliable maintenance services and high-quality lawn mowing. While studying business, Tory received direct mentoring from Master Landscape Designer Gordon-Fletcher Howell. On his quest to learn everything he could about landscaping, Tory traveled the world, gaining extensive horticultural knowledge and hands-on design and installation experience.
After 25 years of growth and experience, Tory updated the company’s name to Better View Landscapes, which he felt was more consistent with the company’s expansive service offerings and mission of creating better views for homeowners and commercial properties. While serving customers throughout the Pioneer Valley, Better View Landscapes has earned a reputation for quality landscaping services and professional integrity. Rich | Landscape Construction Foreman
Rich… a native of Deerfield Ma, joined the Better View Landscapes Team in 2010. As our Lead Construction Foreman he has been behind each one of our construction and design projects in that time. He admires the beauty of nature and genuinely enjoys being outside and working with his hands. Trained by Owner Tory Chlanda he is a skilled stonemason and enjoys putting his touch on every job he does. Rich has acquired a variety of industry achievements and certifications. Rich ensures that all construction projects are executed to perfection and our team is compliant with all safety regulations and standards. Rich is cool, calm, and collected, and those traits further enhance his great attention to detail. In his free time, Rich enjoys watching sports (Go Pats) and enjoying the great outdoors.
Eric | Lawn Care Team Lead
Eric… joined the Better View Landscapes Team in 2015. He is our Lawn Care Team Lead and he also takes the lead for all repairs to equipment and company vehicles in the shop. He is our go-to staff member when it comes to any job requiring a chainsaw. Eric is very skilled in the use of a chainsaw and is always up for a challenge. He is a certified pesticide applicator, which means your lawn will be in good hands. Eric is personable, outgoing, and friendly. Off-Season, he really does look forward to executing our snow removal services and can always be counted on during those brutal winter storms. He loves to work outside and enjoys the flexibility of seasonal work which allows him to spend time with his family and kids. Some of his favorite activities are fishing, snowboarding, video games, and eating BBQ.
Ken | Head Gardener
Ken….Is Passionate (to say the least) about plants and shares this through teaching and working within the green industry. He is so passionate that he made the decision to become a Massachusetts Certified Gardener and is very active with the WMMGA community. Ken loves getting in the soil and teaching others that soil is fun.
Ken’s overall role here at BVL is to maintain the high-quality care our customers expect for their Pioneer Valley homes. He does this by building and executing customized care plans for our maintenance clients. Ken is responsible for teaching and training our Maintenance division staff (something he loves to do) communicating best practices, proper pruning techniques, etc. Ken will be directing our teams and keeping them up-to-date on our client properties’ needs, ensuring his staff has what they need day-to-day. Ken is also responsible for tagging and selecting plant material at the many nurseries we work with along with making perennial orders for our planting installations.

When we bought our home, the back acre had been cleared years ago but not maintained, so we had a thick patch of thorny growth and grapevine that made it impassible to the nearby forest. Initially we just wanted it all cleared, but Tory had some great ideas to make it into something far more beautiful. Now we have a meandering path through wildflower meadow, a fire pit, a fruit orchard, and a playing field that has completely changed our yard.
